Pupukea Beach is a snorkeling spot where you can enjoy the blue ocean and tropical fish.

“Pupukea” means “white shell” in the Hawaiian language, and it is the second designated marine life conservation district on Oahu, following Hanauma Bay.

Despite having many fish and amazing water clarity, it is not often featured in guidebooks and is a relatively quiet beach with fewer tourists.

Since it is a no-fishing area, the fish are not wary, allowing you to see a variety of them right in front of you.

The fish you can see here mainly include damselfish, wrasse, and the Hawaii state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa.

The beach is surrounded by a rock wall, creating a pool-like cove, so families with small children can safely enjoy snorkeling!

Points to Note at Pupukea Beach

While Pupukea Beach is generally very safe, there are just two points to keep in mind.

The first point is to watch your step!

The water depth is about knee to waist high, deep enough for an adult to stand, so it is fine even if you cannot swim. However, because it is shallow and the rocks are rugged, many people get scrapes on their feet and legs.

There are also sea urchins and corals, so please be very careful to avoid injury.

The key is to swim rather than walk when the water is deeper than your knees, and to play as far away from the rocky areas as possible.

Also, if you have water shoes, we highly recommend bringing them.

The second point is that when the waves are large, the current is faster than you might imagine!

The summer season from May to September is recommended, but since this area is surrounded by rocks and less affected by waves, there are many days you can get in the water even in winter.

However, on days with particularly large waves during the winter season, the waves sometimes come over this rock wall.

When that happens, the current can sweep your feet away even in shallow water, making it very dangerous.

Please be careful not to enter the water when no one else is swimming around, or when no-swimming tape is put up!

Facilities Around Pupukea Beach

Since Pupukea Beach is a popular tourist destination, the surrounding facilities are also well-equipped!

Right across the street from the beach, there are dining and shopping spots packed with local charm.

First is the area where colorful food trucks gather.

There is a full lineup of casual local foods you can buy in your swimsuit and eat under the blue sky, such as garlic shrimp trucks, hamburgers, hearty tacos, acai bowls, and smoothies.

Furthermore, right next to it is “Foodland,” a local Hawaiian supermarket.

It is also a great idea to buy fried foods or poke bowls from the deli section to eat.

It is truly a perfect location where you can comfortably spend your entire day!
