Lanikai Beach is the heavenly sea famous for its catchphrase as the No. 1 beach in the US.

As one of the most famous beaches in Hawaii, many people have probably visited it at least once.

The emerald green sea, pure white sand, and gentle waves are exactly like heaven.

It captivates those who visit, making it an overwhelmingly popular beach even among Hawaii locals!

Since it is a naturally formed beach, the sand is fine and its characteristic powdery texture is just like flour.

You can relax by the beautiful sea, enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the nearby Lanikai Pillbox, or actively aim for the twin islands, the Mokulua Islands!

Please fully enjoy the overwhelmingly beautiful scenery.

Reasons Why Lanikai Beach is Called the Heavenly Sea

Lanikai Beach has ranked many times in the past as the most beautiful beach in America.

It is hardly affected by waves, and helped by its shallow terrain, the color of the sea is truly on another level of beauty!

From that atmosphere, the beach was named Lanikai, meaning heavenly sea, as “Lani” means heaven and “Kai” means sea in the Hawaiian language.

It is not just because it is beautiful like heaven, but the name is actually “Heavenly Sea.”

Recommended Activities at Lanikai Beach

The best way to enjoy Lanikai Beach might just be to relax normally.

Swim a little in the beautiful sea and take a nap on the beautiful sandy beach.

It is the best way to spend time in Hawaii!

If you go about 10 meters offshore, coral reefs spread out, fish can be seen, and you might even encounter sea turtles, so you can also snorkel.

Other activities such as kayaking and SUP are also recommended.

Doing your best to go to the twin islands, the Mokulua Islands, visible offshore also gives you quite a sense of accomplishment!

By the way, because the Mokulua Islands are a wild bird sanctuary, the island on the right as viewed from Lanikai Beach is off-limits, so please be careful.

You can land on the sandy beach area of the island on the left, so you can view the beautiful sea of Lanikai from the opposite side!

Please note that jellyfish may appear 8 to 10 days after a full moon, so please be careful when there is a jellyfish warning sign.

Parking, Shower, and Restroom Information for Lanikai Beach

Because Lanikai Beach is located behind residential houses, it is not a public beach.

Therefore, please note that there are no facilities such as parking lots, showers, or restrooms.

If you want to use restrooms or showers, go back to the neighboring Kailua Beach to use them.

Street parking around Lanikai Beach is strictly prohibited every day between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

If you go by car, the golden rule is to park at the Kailua Beach Park parking lot and walk, or use a bicycle, bus, or Uber.

Outside of those hours, you can park right by the beach, but many cars can be seen getting ticketed for parking violations.

There are two reasons for this. The first is when a car is sticking out into the roadway.

You can get a ticket even if your mirror is slightly sticking out into the road, so make sure to park securely without blocking the road.

The other reason is that the roads around Lanikai Beach are narrow, but they are not actually one-way, so it is a parking violation if the car is parked facing the opposite direction of traffic.

Basically, on a two-way street, you must park your car in the direction of traffic.

Also, there are places where you are not allowed to park, such as within about 5 meters from a corner or at residential entrances, so please check these carefully if you are going by rental car!

How to Access Lanikai Beach

Since this is a place people often visit on their own from Kailua Town, I would like to explain the access methods to Lanikai Beach in detail.

There are four main ways to get there: walking, bus, Uber, and bicycle.

It takes about 45 minutes one way on foot, about 15 minutes by electric bicycle, about 20 minutes by regular bicycle, and about 10 minutes by bus or Uber.

By Foot or Bicycle

Kailua Road → Turn left at the intersection with Wanao Road and go north → Turn right when you hit Kailua Beach → Go along Alala Road and take the left fork where the Lanikai Monument is → As you follow the road, you will see small sandy paths on your left, so turn into the 3rd to 6th ones → Go through the sandy path!

There are actually about 10 paths in total, but paths other than the 3rd to 6th ones do not have a sandy beach at the end.

They do connect to the beach, so they are full of a private feel, but the ones with a sandy beach are recommended.

By TheBus

Take bus number 671 from the bus stop in front of Kailua Shopping Center, and you will arrive at the nearest bus stop (Aalapapa Dr + Kaelepulu Dr) in about 10 minutes.

By the way, you also get off at this bus stop if you are heading to the Lanikai Pillbox.

After getting off, walk towards the ocean for about 3 minutes and you will arrive at Lanikai Beach!

By Uber

It is the easiest, and all you have to do is enter “Lanikai Beach” as the destination in the app!

It will automatically determine the shortest route from where you are when you launch the app and calculate the fare.

Once the vehicle arrives, it will take about 10 minutes to reach Lanikai Beach.
