Makapuu Trail is a highly popular hiking trail located on the east coast.

The path is paved all the way to the observation deck at the top, making it safe and easy for beginners to climb!

The incline is relatively gentle, so you will see a variety of people, including those cycling back and forth, running up, and walking their dogs.

It is also very popular with locals, and on weekends it gets so crowded that the parking lot fills up.

The spectacular view waiting for you after the climb is amazing, and from December to April (peak season: January to March), you might even see whales swimming!

This is a trail that anyone can easily enjoy, so be sure to go and fully experience the nature and scenery typical of Hawaii.

Makapuu Trail Observation Deck

The goal of the popular Makapuu Trail is the observation deck overlooking the lighthouse!

You should arrive there after walking along the path for about 45 minutes from the entrance.

The ocean along the east coast of Oahu viewed from the observation deck is beautiful, and the blowing breeze feels incredibly pleasant.

Just gazing at the deep blue ocean that seems to draw you in is sure to make you feel refreshed!

Also, if you look down from the observation deck, you can see the lighthouse that was used in the past.

The path to the lighthouse is currently closed, but Makapuu Trail was originally built to maintain this lighthouse.

Recommended Time and Clothing for Makapuu Trail

Makapuu Trail is a spot suited for beginners, but the distance is long, so it takes some time.

Since there is no shade and the parking lot gets crowded on weekends and holidays, it is highly recommended to go as early in the morning as possible.

There are no restrooms either, so make sure to use one beforehand.

For your reference, the nearest restroom is at Makapuu Beach Park, about a 2-minute drive away.

The path is paved, so flip-flops are okay, but considering you will be walking for a long time, sneakers might be a better choice.

Also, the sun is strong on sunny days, so bring water, a towel, a hat, and sunglasses!

Be sure to take plenty of sun protection measures so you do not turn bright red later.

Be Sure to Check Out Pele’s Chair

If you are going to Makapuu Trail, you definitely want to take a short detour to Pele’s Chair!

It is known as one of the leading spiritual spots on Oahu, making it a perfect addition to your sightseeing.

This is a spectacular viewpoint where Pele, the goddess of fire who created the Hawaiian Islands, is said to have sat down and admired the scenery after creating Oahu.

You can see similar views along the way on Makapuu Trail, but since it is a popular tourist destination, feel free to visit if you like.

We have introduced Pele’s Chair in another article, so please check it out if you need more information.
