Banzai Pipeline is the most famous surfing spot in Hawaii.
Banzai Pipeline is actually the name of the surfing break, and the beach itself is called Ehukai Beach.
There are various theories about the origin of the name Banzai, but the most prominent theory is that when surfer Greg Noll wiped out, he threw both hands up, prompting the filming cameraman to call it Banzai!
Therefore, it is more common to call it Pipeline or Banzai Pipeline rather than Ehukai Beach.
The sight of some of the world’s top-class big waves rolling in is breathtaking, so be sure to stop by if you visit the North Shore around October to March.
By the way, you can also visit during other seasons, but it becomes a calm beach with almost no waves.
Surfing Competitions Held at Banzai Pipeline

The world’s highest level surfing competitions are held at Banzai Pipeline.
The North Shore of Oahu has a long tradition as the stage for the Triple Crown, and top professional surfers gather from all over the world every winter season!
There are plenty of high-level contests throughout the winter, such as the special invitational event Vans Pipe Masters held in December, and the opening event of the world’s premier tour (WSL) held around late January to February.
The competitions at Banzai Pipeline, where you can watch professionals risk their lives challenging the massive wave tubes, are the most exciting in Hawaii and have become the number one popular viewing spot visited by fans from all over the world!
Although Hawaii is generally weak in sports, they are very strong only in surfing, and some athletes even become world champions.
Professionals are always practicing not only during the competition periods but also at other times, so you might see athletes you have seen on TV surfing right in front of you.
By the way, just to the left is a spot called Off The Wall, where waves break closer to the shore than at Banzai Pipeline, so if you want to feel the power of large waves, try extending your walk there.
You will undoubtedly feel a sense of emotion at the enormous waves like you have never seen before, and at the surfers who challenge those waves!
