Kaena Point

Kaena Point is known in Hawaiian island legends as the place where souls rise to heaven.

It is an untouched natural spot where you can meet endangered Hawaiian monk seals and wild albatrosses.

To protect the natural environment, driving cars is prohibited, and there are no paved roads!

Therefore, it is quite difficult to reach, but because nature is so abundant, it is a trekking course loved by locals as well.

It is accessible from both the North Shore and the West Shore, and it is about a 10-kilometer round trip from either Mokuleia Beach Park on the North Shore or Yokohama Bay on the West Shore.

It preserves the most ancient aspects of Hawaii, making it highly recommended for those looking for a rare and unique place.

Kaena Point Pillbox

Scenery of Kaena Point Pillbox

Kaena Point Pillbox is a little-known secret trail located at Kaena Point.

It is a hidden pillbox with spectacular views at the westernmost tip of Oahu!

Because it is protected as an albatross sanctuary, there is no road for about 5 kilometers each way, and it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours just to arrive at the base of the pillbox. Lol

However, since you can enjoy spectacular views of the coastline and mountains all the way, you can comfortably take a walk except during the midsummer season.

This is a recommended spot for those who love the nature of Hawaii!

Hawaiian Railway

Hawaiian Railway is a sightseeing train in Hawaii that brings a sense of nostalgia.

It is a railway owned by a sugarcane plantation that operated until 1947 after the war!

Currently, it is operated as a sightseeing train by volunteers, with a schedule of 5 runs in total: 1 run every Wednesday and 2 runs each on Saturday and Sunday.

The route starts from a place called Ewa on Oahu and goes to Electric Beach, where the thermal power plant is located.

Hawaiian trains are colorful in red and green, but their faded colors create a retro and nostalgic atmosphere, which feels really nice.

The scenery along the route is great, and it is a spot where you can also feel the history of Hawaii. So please enjoy the atmosphere of the West Shore of Oahu by train while feeling the Hawaiian breeze!

Hawaii Plantation Village

Hawaii Plantation Village is a field trip spot where you can learn about the history of immigrants in Hawaii.

It is a museum where you can discover how the sugarcane industry was brought to Hawaii in the 1800s and how the Kingdom of Hawaii subsequently changed due to immigrants from various countries!

It is said that immigrants from more than 30 countries arrived between 1850 and 1950. At Hawaii Plantation Village, the lifestyles of immigrants from eight of the central regions (China, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Hawaii) are on display.

By the way, although Okinawa and Korea were under Japanese administration at the time, they are categorized separately because of their distinct cultures.

It is a bit of a hidden gem, but it serves as a precious place in Hawaii where you can experience the sensation of slipping back in time.

Pink Pillbox (Puu O Hulu)

Pink Pillbox is a spectacular viewing spot where you can overlook the West Shore of Oahu, famous for its beautiful coastal scenery.

It is an extremely popular trail as one of the best Instagram-worthy spots in Hawaii.

It is a cute pink pillbox towering atop a steep cliff. It is called “Puu O Hulu” in Hawaiian, and its official English name is “Maili Pillbox”.

There are several pillboxes in Hawaii, but in fact, all of these are places with good visibility that were used as observation posts during the war!

By the way, the reason this Pink Pillbox is pink is that it was painted as part of the “Pink Ribbon Campaign” to eradicate breast cancer.

Compared to other pillboxes on Oahu, it is at a higher elevation and a bit more challenging, but you will be rewarded with a spectacular view for your effort, so please do your best to climb it.
