Puu Maelieli Pillbox is a hidden gem in Hawaii, offering spectacular views.

It’s also known as the “Kaneohe Pillbox” or “Sandbar Pillbox” because it overlooks the Kaneohe Sandbar.

Its most stunning feature is the incredible panoramic view, stretching over 180 degrees to encompass not only the sandbar but also Kualoa and the Lanikai area!

Compared to other pillbox hikes, this one is a bit longer and can be more challenging due to steep slopes and areas prone to mud.

However, the scenery is so moving that photos can’t do it justice, making it a highly recommended pillbox hike in my opinion.

Tips for Visiting Puu Maelieli Pillbox

While Puu Maelieli Pillbox offers breathtaking views and comes highly recommended, it’s a spot that is notoriously hard to find due to its difficult-to-access location and the fact that it’s rarely crowded.

You can access it via a small path near the Koolau Center, which is across the road from the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, home to the Byodo-In Temple.

Unlike other pillbox hikes, sturdy, slip-resistant shoes are essential—do not wear sandals!

Also, since you’ll be walking through a forest, mosquito repellent is a must.

There are no public facilities like restrooms or water fountains, so be sure to bring your own water, towels, and other necessities.

The Puu Maelieli Pillbox Trail

The trail is longer than other popular hikes like the Lanikai Pillbox (Kaiwa Ridge Trail) on the East Shore, the Pink Pillbox (Maili Pillbox) on the West Coast, and the Ehukai Pillbox on the North Shore.

The hike takes about 45 minutes to the top and 35 minutes back down, totaling just under an hour and a half round trip.

While children can manage the trail, be cautious as there are areas where trees can act as obstacles.

The most challenging part is the steep, muddy slope near the entrance, which is often damp and very slippery throughout the day due to the area receiving a lot of rain.

Even with hiking shoes, it can be slippery, so it’s a good idea to use a sturdy tree branch as a walking stick.
