Pupukea Beach is a fantastic snorkeling spot where you can enjoy the blue ocean and tropical fish.

“Pupukea” means “white shell” in Hawaiian. It is the second area on Oahu to be designated as a Marine Life Conservation District, after Hanauma Bay.

Despite being abundant with fish and having wonderfully clear water, it’s a beach not often featured in guidebooks, making it less crowded.

Since it’s a no-fishing zone, the fish are not wary and you can see a variety of them up close.

The fish you can see here mainly include damselfish, wrasses, and the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, which is the state fish of Hawaii.

The beach is surrounded by a rock wall, creating a pool-like cove, so even families with small children can enjoy snorkeling safely!

Precautions at Pupukea Beach

While Pupukea Beach is generally very safe, there are two precautions to keep in mind.

First, be careful where you step!

The water depth ranges from knee-high to waist-high, so adults can stand, making it safe even for those who can’t swim. However, the rocky and shallow bottom means many people get scrapes on their feet.

There are also sea urchins and coral, so be very careful to avoid injury.

When the water is deeper than your knees, it’s best to swim rather than walk, and try to stay away from the rocky areas.

Second, when the waves are large, the current can be surprisingly fast!

The recommended season is summer, from May to September. However, since the area is enclosed by rocks and less affected by waves, there are many days you can go in even during the winter.

However, on days with very large waves during the winter season, waves can come over this rock wall.

When this happens, it becomes dangerous as the current can sweep you off your feet even in shallow water.

Be sure not to enter the water when no one else is swimming or if “No Swimming” tape is posted!
