Kalama Beach is a hidden spot in Kailua Bay, home to some of the most beautiful waters in Hawaii.

It is a beach where former President Obama used to play frequently during his childhood, and it is also famous for his recent visits with his family, which is why it is also known as “Obama Beach”!

If you walk southeast along the coast, you will find Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach, which have been ranked as the best beaches in the United States.

The powdery white sand and the beautiful emerald-green and blue waters are equally breathtaking.

This is a highly recommended spot for those who want to swim at a beautiful, hidden, and uncrowded beach!

The Charm of Kalama Beach

The greatest charm of Kalama Beach is that it is not featured in tourist guidebooks and is deeply blended into the daily lives of the locals.

Because it is not visible from the road, there are few visiting tourists, making it a quiet place where local people come for their morning walks and dog walking.

The waves are slightly higher than at Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach, so there are also many people who come here to go bodyboarding!

However, since it is a sparsely populated area with no lifeguards, please be very careful when swimming or playing in the water.

How to Access Kalama Beach

Since this is a place that many people visit on their own from Kailua Town, we would like to provide a detailed explanation of how to access Kalama Beach.

There are mainly three ways to get there: on foot, by Uber, and by bicycle.

It takes about 30 minutes each way on foot, about 15 minutes by electric bicycle, about 20 minutes by regular bicycle, and about 10 minutes by Uber.

By Walking or Bicycle

Proceed from Kailua Road to Kuulei Road and go straight toward the ocean side -> You will hit a T-intersection (South Kalaheo Avenue) -> Turn left and go north (the street becomes North Kalaheo Avenue) -> You will see the parking lot for Kalama Beach Park on your right side.

Kalama Beach cannot be seen from the road, so make sure not to miss the Kalama Beach Park parking lot!

By Uber

This is the easiest way; just enter “Kalama Beach” as your destination in the app!

The app will automatically calculate the shortest route from your location when you open it and will also calculate the fare for you.

Once your ride arrives, you will reach Kalama Beach in about 10 minutes!
