The Hawaiian Railway is a tourist train in Hawaii that evokes a sense of nostalgia.

It’s a railway that was once owned by a sugar cane plantation and operated until 1947!

Today, it is operated as a tourist train by volunteers, running on a schedule of five trips per week: one on Wednesdays, and two each on Saturdays and Sundays.♪

The route starts from a place called Ewa on Oahu and goes to Electric Beach, where a power plant is located.

The trains are colorful, with reds and greens, but their faded colors give them a wonderful retro and nostalgic feel.

The scenery along the route is beautiful, and it’s a spot where you can feel the history of Hawaii. Be sure to enjoy the atmosphere of Oahu’s west coast by train while feeling the Hawaiian breeze!

Hawaiian Railway Departure Times

The train departure times are 1:00 PM on Wednesdays, 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM on Saturdays, and 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM on Sundays.

Unfortunately, there is no system for advance reservations, so you’ll need to go to the station a little early on the day of your visit to purchase tickets!

Ticket sales start at 11:30 AM, so head to the ticket office first after you arrive at the parking lot.

The first train of the day is usually not crowded, but please be aware that the second train on Saturdays and Sundays can be busy.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to buy your tickets early and then take a walk around the station area to pass the time.

The ticket office area has souvenirs and a small train museum, so you might want to check that out!

Near the ticket office, you can also see a model railroad museum and a repair shop.

Hawaiian Railway Route

The tourist train has no windows, giving it a very open and Hawaiian feel.

The west coast of Oahu is generally a sunny area, so you don’t have to worry too much about the weather.♪

It’s dangerous to stand while the train is moving, so please make sure to remain seated.

In true Hawaiian fashion, people will wave at the train as it passes by!

There are no railroad crossing gates, so when the train crosses a road, a staff member stops the car traffic each time. Haha.

The total ride is about 90 minutes, with each one-way trip taking 45 minutes on the single track. A guide will share various stories (in English only) as you travel from the starting point in Ewa to Electric Beach on the west coast.

On the return trip, they have you switch seats between the ocean side (makai) and the mountain side (mauka), so you can enjoy the scenery without getting bored.♪

Enjoy the many Hawaiian landscapes, from industrial areas and Ko Olina to the beautiful coastline.
