The Banzai Pipeline is Hawaii’s most famous surfing spot.

While Banzai Pipeline is the name of the surf break, the beach itself is actually called Ehukai Beach.

There are several theories about the origin of the name “Banzai,” but the most prominent one suggests it came from a photographer who shouted it after surfer Greg Noll wiped out and threw his arms up in the air!

That’s why it’s more commonly known as the Pipeline or Banzai Pipeline, rather than Ehukai Beach.

The sight of some of the world’s most powerful waves crashing here is absolutely breathtaking, so if you’re visiting the North Shore between October and March, be sure to stop by and see it for yourself.

Surfing Competitions Held at the Banzai Pipeline

The Banzai Pipeline is also home to the Pipe Masters, a world-renowned surfing competition.

On Oahu, there are three major world surfing competitions that make up the Triple Crown of Surfing.

The series includes the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Beach in mid-to-late November, the Vans World Cup at Sunset Beach in early December, and finally, the Pipe Masters at the Banzai Pipeline in mid-to-late December.

The event at Banzai Pipeline is the grand finale, where the top-ranking surfers compete, making it the most popular and highest-level competition in Hawaii!

While Hawaii is known for many things, it truly excels in surfing, producing many world champions.

Even outside of the competition season, professional surfers are always practicing here, so you might just see a famous athlete you’ve watched on TV surfing right in front of you.

Just to the left is another spot called “Off the Wall,” where the waves break closer to the shore than at Pipeline. If you want to feel the sheer power of the big waves up close, it might be worth checking out.

You’re sure to be moved by the sight of waves larger than you’ve ever seen and the incredible surfers who dare to ride them!
