Koko Head is one of the hardest trails in Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officially, it is called the Koko Crater Railway Trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is often said to be the most difficult trail on Oahu because the course involves walking endlessly on the railroad ties of an old tramway track that stretches straight up the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a training-like path where you simply keep climbing a total of 1,048 stairs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is absolutely no shade or resting spots, the steep incline is like climbing a ladder, and the elevation is quite high. Haha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the sense of accomplishment when you finish the climb and the spectacular view spreading out before your eyes cannot be described in words!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is tough, but it is absolutely worth the climb, so if you are confident, please give it a try while being careful to avoid accidents and injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koko Head is a trail for somewhat advanced hikers, so solid preparation is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandals and restrictive clothing are a no-go; wear trekking shoes or sneakers and comfortable clothes that are easy to move in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also takes quite a bit of time, so it is a good idea to bring sunglasses, a hat, water, and light snacks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because there is a constant stream of tourists who become immobilized due to heatstroke or dehydration and have to be rescued by helicopter, make sure to bring plenty of water in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail starts out as a gentle course, but the incline gradually becomes steeper, and near the summit, it feels as if you are climbing stairs or a ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the incline, there is a spot halfway up where the ground drops away beneath you, and it is a little scary because it feels like you might fall if you lose your footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, there is a short detour route that allows you to walk on the solid ground next to the tracks, avoiding only the dangerous bridge area halfway up where the ground drops away underneath. If you are feeling uneasy, please try taking that route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking frequent breaks, you will arrive at the summit in about 45 minutes to an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because you will be exposed to direct sunlight no matter what, we recommend climbing during the cool early morning or late afternoon hours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you reach the summit of Koko Head, there is not a single place around you that is higher than where you stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a clear reason why so many people make the climb despite the high difficulty level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can see many of Oahu’s famous sights, such as the East Shore, Hanauma Bay, the Koolau Mountain Range, Diamond Head, and Waikiki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the weather is clear, you can even see Maui and Lanai in the distance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey may be tough, but by all means, try aiming for this view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
