History of Waikiki Beach

Before being developed as a resort, the Waikiki area was a wetland and agricultural zone.

There is a history of creating the current appearance of Waikiki by building a large artificial river called the Ala Wai Canal to prevent water flowing from the mountains into Waikiki, and reclaiming the land that used to be wetlands.

Because river water and soil no longer flow down, the sandy beach constantly erodes, so sand is actually added to Waikiki Beach once every few years!

Surprisingly, the sand at Waikiki Beach comes from California. (Laughs)

Waikiki Beach has some artificial aspects like this, but that resort atmosphere has become the very image of Hawaii.

We can only be grateful to the predecessors who turned Waikiki, which has the most sunny days in Hawaii and the best conditions, into a resort!
