Wahiawa Botanical Garden is a treasure trove of plants, one of Hawaii’s five major botanical gardens, yet it has the feel of a hidden gem.

The garden is set in a ravine, and the atmosphere changes depending on the elevation of the path you walk.

In the upper area, where the paths are paved, you can enjoy mainly native Hawaiian forests, while in the lower area, after descending into the ravine, you can explore a tropical rainforest jungle!

Located in a plateau region nestled between the Waianae and Koolau mountain ranges, the area receives a lot of rain throughout the year, allowing a wide variety of tropical plants to thrive.

It’s the perfect location for a leisurely stroll while listening to the chirping of birds.

Recommended Plants at Wahiawa Botanical Garden

If I had to name one feature unique to Wahiawa Botanical Garden among the many botanical gardens in Hawaii, it would undoubtedly be the abundance of tropical plants!

In particular, plants characteristic of tropical rainforests, such as ferns and mosses, are not often seen elsewhere in Hawaii.

You can observe interesting plants like heliconia, often used in Hawaiian quilt designs, the native Hawaiian loulu palm, and the hapuu (Hawaiian tree fern), which is only found in high-elevation, moist areas.

Since it’s a rainy area, there are many mosquitoes, and the paths are intricate and maze-like, so be sure to prepare with insect repellent and comfortable walking shoes!

The Palm Trees of Royal Palm Drive

About a block away from the botanical garden, there’s a street lined with palm trees on both sides.

This is a street known only to a few, and it has the lovely name ‘Royal Palm Drive.’

The reason for this street’s existence is that a plantation manager once lived here, and these palm trees were planted along the road leading to his mansion.

It seems mansions and palm trees have always been a classic combination.

It’s very close to the botanical garden, so be sure to check it out as well.
