Menehune Mac, a long-established chocolate maker, was founded in 1939.
Among the many chocolate brands in Hawaii, it was one of the few companies dedicated to handmade quality!
Because of this, their most popular macadamia nut chocolates couldn’t be mass-produced, making them a rare find even in major stores like ABC Stores.
They were a premium, authentic treat made with Hawaiian macadamia nuts and high-quality chocolate.
If you happen to see them in the Waikiki area, they are one of the top souvenirs you should definitely pick up!
The Menehune Mac Chocolate-Making Experience

A unique feature of Menehune Mac was that it was the only place in Hawaii where you could experience making chocolate by hand right in the factory.
This uniquely Hawaiian experience made it a popular hidden gem for families.
You could mix the chocolate and macadamia nuts yourself, place it in a special container, and put it in a package with your name on it to create your very own one-of-a-kind chocolate.
Anyone aged 7 and older was able to participate.
Reservations were not required for the tour, and you could join on the day of your visit, so you just needed to arrive at the scheduled time.
Additionally, the factory-direct shop offered souvenirs at a lower price, making it worth a visit even if you didn’t participate in the chocolate-making experience!
They offered a wide variety of treats, from chocolates and cookies perfect for souvenirs to Japanese-style sweets and even sugar-free confections.
The Menehune: Hawaii’s Legendary Elves
You often hear the word “Menehune” in Hawaii. It refers to the hardworking little people from Hawaiian legends.
Standing only about three feet (92 cm) tall, these elves are said to start working at dusk and complete their tasks perfectly overnight!
It’s even said that the Menehune are the ones who create the rainbows in Hawaii.
The brand’s concept was also rooted in honoring the teachings of the Menehune, which is why they were so committed to their handmade process.
