Kalama Beach is a hidden gem in Kailua Bay, home to some of the most beautiful waters in Hawaii.
It was a favorite childhood haunt of former President Obama, and he is known to still visit with his family, earning it the nickname “Obama Beach.”
Just a short walk to the east, you’ll find the nationally acclaimed Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach.
Its powdery white sand and beautiful emerald-green waters are just as stunning.
It’s the perfect spot for those who want to swim at a beautiful, uncrowded beach!
The Charm of Kalama Beach

The greatest appeal of Kalama Beach is that it’s rarely featured in guidebooks and is truly a part of the local daily life.
Hidden from the road, it attracts few tourists and remains a quiet place where locals come for morning walks or to walk their dogs.
The waves are a bit higher here than at Kailua or Lanikai Beach, so you’ll often see people bodyboarding.
However, it’s a less crowded spot with no lifeguards, so please be careful when you’re in the water.
How to Get to Kalama Beach

Since many people visit Kalama Beach on their own from Kailua Town, here is a detailed guide on how to get there.
The main ways to get there are by foot, Uber, or bicycle.
It’s about a 30-minute walk one way. By bicycle, it takes about 15 minutes with an electric bike or 20 minutes with a standard one. An Uber ride is approximately 10 minutes.
By Foot or Bicycle
From Kailua Road, turn right at the junction with Kuulei Road and head north. When you reach the T-junction at South Kalaheo Avenue, turn left. Continue for a while (the street becomes North Kalaheo Avenue), and you’ll see the Kalama Beach Park parking lot on your right.
Kalama Beach isn’t visible from the road, so be sure not to miss the Kalama Beach Park parking lot!
By Uber
This is the easiest option. Simply enter “Kalama Beach” as your destination in the app.
The app will automatically find the fastest route from your current location and calculate the fare.
Once your car arrives, you’ll be at Kalama Beach in about 10 minutes.
