Guieb Cafe is an exquisite hidden gem of a restaurant in Hawaii that you won’t often find in guidebooks.

Located in the affordable Kalihi district, it is extremely popular among locals for being cheap, delicious, and offering generous portions.

From sweets to savory meals, every item on the menu offers outstanding value for money!

Business hours are a bit short, from 7:00 to 15:00, so be sure to visit for breakfast or lunch.

You might have heard that Kalihi has a reputation for being a bit rough, but it just has a stronger local vibe. In return, there are many shops offering great deals, so it is definitely worth checking out.

Recommended Menu Items at Guieb Cafe

The menu at Guieb Cafe ranges widely from sweets like pancakes, waffles, and French toast to egg dishes and meat dishes.

Also, there is a unique, addictive flavor that is hard to describe, but I think it is truly delicious!

Ube Mascarpone Pancakes

With purple cream and purple batter, these Ube Pancakes make a huge impact.

Ube is a vegetable often eaten in tropical places like Hawaii, and it is different from taro or purple sweet potato.

Taro is related to the eddo root and purple sweet potato is a sweet potato variety, while Ube is a type of yam distinct from both.

It features a vivid purple color and a sticky texture, and it is used in various sweets in Hawaii.

Such ube is kneaded generously into the pancake batter, and the ube and mascarpone cream on top has just the right amount of sweetness to make it addictive.

It comes as a stack of three chewy pancakes, so you will get quite full. Haha.

Bao Bun (Eggs Benedict)

This is a slightly rare Chinese-style Eggs Benedict.

A soft-boiled egg sits atop pork belly char siu, cucumber, and cilantro, and the hollandaise sauce is enhanced with hoisin sauce, a Chinese seasoning.

The egg yolk tangles with the sweet and salty char siu and cucumber, creating a great compatibility with the sauce!

There is a wide variety of side options to choose from, including white rice, hash browns, sweet potato fries, toast, mashed potatoes, salad, brown rice, fried rice, and more.

Eggs Benedict has an image of being a breakfast staple, but since the volume is boosted by the char siu, it is a dish that is very satisfying for lunch as well.

Prime Rib Loco Moco

This is Guieb Cafe’s signature dish that many people come here seeking.

The Prime Rib is also a very popular menu item, but if you are going to eat here, I recommend the Prime Rib Loco Moco that you cannot eat at other shops.

It is a steak version of Loco Moco rather than a hamburger steak, and the prime rib sitting on top of the rice weighs a whopping 10 ounces (approx. 280g)!

Furthermore, it is topped with plenty of gravy and two sunny-side-up eggs, so the size is enough to share between two people. Haha.

It is great that even with such a hearty meal, the price is cheaper than a plate lunch in Waikiki.
