The Byodo-In Temple is a hidden gem in Hawaii where you can fully experience a piece of Japan.
It was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, as a replica of the Byodo-in Temple in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture.
Although it’s about one-third the size of the original temple in Japan, the atmosphere is strikingly similar. With the stunning Koolau Mountains towering in the background, its mystical aura might be even more pronounced!
The temple is located at the back of the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, a cemetery park in the Kaneohe area.
It has been featured as a filming location in numerous movies and TV shows, including “Pearl Harbor,” making it a very popular stop on sightseeing tours!
The Seated Amida Buddha Statue at Byodo-In Temple
While the scenery surrounding the Byodo-In Temple, nestled in nature, may seem like its main attraction, there is much more to see.
Inside the main hall sits a magnificent, gold-leaf-covered Amida Buddha statue, standing approximately 9 feet (about 3 meters) tall!
The interior is meticulously detailed, making it hard to believe the structure is made of concrete.
The scent of incense filling the room truly makes you feel as if you are in Japan. lol
By the way, as is customary in Japan, shoes are not allowed inside, so be sure to take them off at the entrance!
Hawaii is home to various Japanese shrines like the Izumo Taishakyo Mission and the Kotohira Jinsha-Dazaifu Tenmangu, but personally, considering its scale and atmosphere, the Byodo-In Temple is my top recommendation.
The Sacred Bell at Byodo-In Temple: A Power Spot for Happiness
There is also a magnificent bell tower on the grounds, which often draws curious looks from foreign visitors. lol
When you ring the bell, its powerful sound resonates throughout the Koolau Mountains!
There is a legend that couples who ring the bell together will find happiness.
Even if you’re not a couple, be sure to give it a ring when you visit.
It’s one of Hawaii’s hidden power spots!
The Mystical and Beautiful Japanese Garden and Koi Pond at Byodo-In Temple
The area surrounding the Byodo-In Temple is a large Japanese garden, offering a picturesque and tranquil landscape.
A large pond is home to many magnificent koi fish.
You can also feed them, making it a consistently popular spot for children!
In addition, you can see black swans, peacocks, and turtles.
It feels like a wonderful and harmonious fusion of Japanese and Hawaiian culture.
Visitor Information: Goshuin, Omamori, Admission Fees, and More
An admission fee is required to enter the Byodo-In Temple.
If you arrive by car, you will pay the fee at the entrance of either the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park or the Byodo-In Temple itself.
Goshuin (commemorative temple stamps) and omamori (good luck charms) are available for purchase at the gift shop on the grounds!
They also sell a variety of other items, such as happi coats, carvings of bells and Buddha statues, and fish food for the koi.
Additionally, there’s a Japanese-style teahouse nearby.
It’s a great place to stop by when you get tired from walking around the spacious grounds.
